Apply for PAN Card


Like all other government issued proofs, PAN too requires applicants to submit a certain set of documents for identification purposes. Application for PAN can be made either online or offline. There are two kinds of application forms available for the same. One is form 49A and the other, for foreigners is form 49AA . Also, applications can be made both for new PAN as well as correction or reprint of an existing PAN card.

Documents required for each type of PAN application are different and can be segregated based on the entities that are applying for it. Let us look into the different sets of documents required by various entities in order to obtain PAN.

Documents Required for New PAN Application by an Individual Indian Citizen 2018

Following is the list of documents that are required by an individual applicant who is a citizen of India.

Proof of Identity required to apply for PAN Card by an Individual who is Indian Citizen

Following are the required documents out of which any one can be submitted as identity proof.

1. Copy of voter's identity card.

2. Ration card with the applicant's photograph.

3. Copy of passport.

4. Copy of driving license.

5. Arm's license.

6. Copy of Aadhar card issued by Unique Identification Authority of India

7. Photo identity card issued by central government or state government or any other public sector undertaking.

8. Central government health scheme card.

9. Bank certificate containing an attested photograph of the applicant along with bank account number of the applicant.

10. Copy of pensioner card having photograph of the applicant.

11. Certificate of identity in original signed by a Member of Parliament or Member of Legislative Assembly or Municipal Councillor.




In case of PAN card application for minors, any of the above documents either for parents or the minor can be submitted as proof of identity.


Address Proof Required to Apply for PAN Card by an Individual who is a Citizen of India

Copy of the following documents that can be submitted as address proof.

1. Copy of electricity bills

2. Copy of landline bills

3. Copy of broadband connection bill

4. Bank account statements

5. Credit card statement

6. Post office passbook featuring address of the applicant.

P7. Passport of spouse.

8. Voter identity card with photograph.

9. Latest order for property taxassessment.

10. Driving license

11. Domicile certificate issued by government

12. Aadhar card issued by Unique Identification Authority of India.

13. Allotment letter.

If submitting copy of one of the first five documents, the documents should not be more than three months old.


Proof of Date of Birth Required for PAN Card Application by an Individual who is a Citizen of India

Proof of age is also required to be submitted by the PAN applicant. Any document that specifies the date of birth of the applicant serves the purpose. This document has to be any one of those listed below.

1. Birth certificate issued by the Municipal Authority or any office authorized to issue Birth and Death Certificate by the Registrar of Birth and Deaths or the Indian Consulate.

2. Pension payment order.

3. Marriage certificate issued by Registrar of Marriages.

4. Matriculation certificate.

5. Passport.

6. Driving license; or

7. Domicile certificate issued by the central or state government.

8. Affidavit signed before a magistrate stating the date of birth.


Documents Required for HUF(Hindu Undivided Family) PAN Application

Hindu Undivided families are units which joint families in India form if there is a family business that is being shared between family members. This unit is required because in such situations there is a joint income earned and hence the income tax is attributed to the whole unit. For a Hindu Undivided Family or HUF, a single PAN is assigned to the whole unit. The application process requires a certain set of documents to be submitted. All Hindu Undivided Families are supposed to select a karta who is required to carry out all official formalities on behalf of the HUF. These documents are listed above and are same as the documents that are applicable to all citizens of India.

Apart from that, they will need to submit the following additional documents:

A declaration signed by the karta of the HUF stating the name, father's name and address of all the HUF membersCopy of any of the above listed proof documents of the member who is supposed to act as the karta of the Hindu Undivided Family

Company Need to Submit Following Documents to Apply Pan

Documents required by any registered company for PAN Card Application in India are just a couple of things. This so because companies do not have a huge list of address or identity proofs to choose from in order to apply for PAN.

Here are the two documents that are required by any company registered in India, for the purpose of PAN allocation.

Copy of Registration Certificate issued by the Registrar of Companies.

Documents required for PAN application by a Company Registered outside India. Copy of certificate of registration issued by the Registrar of Firms or copy of Partnership DeedCopy of Registration Certificate issued in India or copy of approval granted to set up company in India by Indian authorities

Documents Required to Apply for PAN Card by a Firm (includes Limited Liability Partnership) registered or formed in India.

A Limited Liability Partnership is where all partners have limited liabilities and no one partner is responsible for misconduct or negligence of the other partner/partners. Following are the two documents required by LLPs for PAN application in India. Either of these documents can be submitted.

1. Copy of Registration Certificate issued by the Registrar of Limited Liability Partnerships or;

2. Copy of partnership deed.

Required Documents for PAN Card Application by Trusts Registered or Formed in India

An Association of Persons (Trust) is a unit that is formed by a group of individuals and is allowed to hold assets on behalf of a beneficiary or beneficiaries. Trusts can be formed in several different ways based on the aim of the unit.

Following are the documents required by a trust which is trying to apply for PAN.

1. Copy of deed of Trust.

2. Copy of Certificate of Registration Number issued by Charity Commissioner.

Documents Required to Apply for PAN Card by Trusts Registered outside India

Documents required for PAN application by an Association of persons (Trusts) registered outside India

Copy of certificate of registration issued by the Registrar of Firms or copy of Partnership DeedCopy of Registration Certificate issued in India or copy of approval granted to set up the trust in India by Indian authorities

Documents Required for PAN Application by an Association of Persons (other than Trusts) Registered in India

Following are the documents required by the above listed entities for the purpose of PAN application by an Association of Persons (other than Trusts) or body of individuals or local authority or artificial juridical person registered or formed in India.

1. Agreement copycopy of Certificate of Registration Number issued by Charity Commissioner or Registrar of Co-operative Society or any other Competent Authority; or

2. Any other document originating from any Central Government or State Government Department establishing Identity and address of such person.

Documents required for PAN Application by an Association of Persons (other than Trusts) Registered outside India

Following are the Documents Required for PAN application by an Association of persons (except trusts) or body of individuals or local authority or any other entity registered outside India

Copy of certificate of registration issued by the Registrar of Firms or copy of Partnership DeedCopy of Registration Certificate issued in India or copy of approval granted to set up the entity in India by Indian authorities

The above listed information on documents required is based on the entity that is applying for PAN and based also on whether that entity is located in India or outside. Different documents are required in case the entity is not located in India. This is because standard proof documents are neither available nor relevant in such cases
